How to create Eco-friendly Watercolors

Making eco-friendly watercolors is a creative and environmentally conscious project. Here’s a simple recipe for making your own eco-friendly watercolors using natural ingredients:

Blue watercolor from blueberry juice

Ingredients:

  1. Natural Pigments: You can use various natural materials to create pigments for your watercolors. Some options include:
  • Beet juice (for red and pink tones)
  • Turmeric (for yellow tones)
  • Spinach juice (for green tones)
  • Blueberry juice (for blue tones)
  • Coffee (for brown tones)
  1. Watercolor Pans: These can be empty metal or plastic pans for holding your pigments. You can also reuse old watercolor pans or small containers.
  2. Binder: Gum arabic or honey can be used as a binder to hold the pigments together. Both are natural and safe for use.
  3. Water: To dilute and mix the pigments.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Pigments:
  • For vegetable-based pigments like beet juice, turmeric, spinach juice, and blueberry juice, you’ll need to extract the colors. Squeeze the juice from these natural sources and strain out any solids.
  • For coffee, simply brew a strong cup of coffee and let it cool to room temperature.
  1. Mix with Binder:
  • In separate containers, mix each pigment with a small amount of gum arabic or honey. The ratio of pigment to binder can vary, but start with approximately 1 part pigment to 1 part binder. Adjust to achieve your desired consistency.
  1. Fill Watercolor Pans:
  • Pour or spoon the mixed pigments into your empty watercolor pans or containers. Make sure not to overfill; leave a little space for the paints to dry.
  1. Let It Dry:
  • Allow your homemade watercolors to dry completely. This may take a few days to a week, depending on the thickness of the pigments and the humidity in your environment.
  1. Use Your Eco-Friendly Watercolors:
  • Once dry, your eco-friendly watercolors are ready to use. Wet a paintbrush and start painting as you would with regular watercolors.
  1. Store Properly:
  • Keep your homemade watercolors in a cool, dry place to prevent them from getting moldy or becoming too brittle.

Homemade eco-friendly watercolors are a fun and sustainable way to enjoy art while minimizing the use of synthetic and harmful chemicals found in commercial paints. Experiment with different natural pigments to create a diverse palette of colors.
